ask genetics

Before i begin, i should write this fact that really shocked me. According to the reading, there is a 6 million differences between any two people's DNA. So I wondered, how complicated should the DNA be to have 6 million differences? Is there anyone who has the same DNA with me in this whole entire world? Are DNAs of identical twins same? or is it different too? so I looked it up in the google, and i found pretty interesting fact. identical twins, formed when one fertilized egg splits, are the only people in the world with identical DNA. Fraternal twins, on the other hand, are formed when two different eggs are fertilized. Genetically speaking, fraternal twins are no closer than normal siblings, sharing only about 50% of their genes. Although identical twins have the same genotype, or DNA, they have different phenotypes, meaning that the same DNA is expressed in different ways.

Anyways, back to the homework!
In these web sites that sunnyD gave us, i found few interesting facts. According to it, there are generally 10 trillion chromosome pair possibilites! But this wasn't really the one that really surprised me. In the reading, i found out that a number drops to 4 if we only have a pair of chromosomes. It's a huge difference!
oh, and while i was scrolling around in the site, i found a mystery(if you can call it that way) behind the 46 chromosomes! THe reason why the chromosomes are not in shaoe of a long- chain of genes is because that it is more easier to reproduce when it is in a form of 46 chromosomes.

Heres the other fact that surprised me. Chimps and humans are over 98% the same. Here's the question: Even though we are evolutionary cousins with chimps, we have differente types of genes since the humans had lost and gained the new ones while developing. I think that is why we could get more intelligent and smart. Here's the question. If human and chimps are over 98 percent same, is it possible to mix chimps genes that are same with humans and some of human's genes? Would it have same genes with humans? Or would it be still different? And last but not least, i learned that karyotype is a chart that scientists use to study chromosomes

I learned lots of things from this website. Even though i learned much more things in this website, I'll only going to list 2 things I learned since I want to check out the rest of the site. so here are the two thingsI learned about heridity;

Traits are a definit variant of a feature and characteristic that we have. Those traits will be passed down to our children, like when out parents passed it down to us. And it will be passed down to generation to generation. For instance, if the parent of the child has a green eyes and a brown eyes, there are 50% of chance for the child to have a brown eyes, 37.% to green eyes, and 12.5% to blue eyes. Like this, we get the similar characteristics that our parents does because of the heridity. This lead us to another question. How do we get traits from our parents? The answer is very easy. When a couple concieve a child, half of their 46 chromosomes, which makes a set a 23 chromosomes gets contributed to the child(humans have 2 complete set of chromosomes, and the baby gets contibute only one of the set.)In this way, parents pass genes to their child. According to the tour, each of us has thousands of genes, which are madw of DNA and reside in our chromosomes.


As I explained on the 1st paragraph, every child only recieves half of its chromosomes from each of the parent. When the father's spern cell and mother's cell joins together, It turns in tho a single cell called "zygote". Accordint to the tour, a set of baby can contain chrosomes from both of the parent's teo sets. Even though it looks like there isn't any rules in frming a grnr, there is a one rule that needs to be done. And the rule is this: The child must recieve exactly one of each chromosomes. Other then that, a chromosomes rendomly gets contributed to a babywhich helps a baby to get a uniue seet of chromosomes.

And those were my 2 facts i learned in the tour. Since I really want to explore around the website, I guess I'llhave to stop typing. see ya1

Class Review

Since our class have studied about owl and the owl pellet, I learned a lot of things about it. I have learned that they redurgigate the bones and the fur of eaten animal. The teeeth and the feather are compressed in a pellet too. The food they eat were clothes, moths, carpet beetles and fungi. according to mrs.sunny, owl has 2 stomaches called glandular stomach and the muscular stomach. Glandular stomach is where the owl digest the food, and the muscular stomach is where they make the pellet and store them for about 10~20 hours. I also learned that owl eats their food as whole because they're not able to che it since they don't have a teeth. According to a information i found in google, owl has np crop unlike othr birds. Crop is a loos sac in the throat that serves as storage for foof for later consumption. Since they don't have crop, they passes the food directly into thieer digestive systrm. Also, owl pellets differ from other birds of prey in that they contain a grater proportion of food residue. The reason why is that the owl's digestive juices are lessacidic than in other birds of prey.


We formed a group of 2 or 3 and then chose one of the pellet from the peller pile. At first we just recorded the length, width, and the mass of the pellet, but then we softly broke the pellet in to half and started to seperate the bones from the fur and am putting the bones together. We also took a look at the animal that owl regurated. Me and my group found 3 skulls in our pellet, and I thought it was very interesting. I was very surprised when I counted all the ribs that were in the pellet. there was about 50 of them. This was really fun and interesting experiment and it was pretty amazing how many animals can be in one owl pellet, and how many bones there could be in one owl pellet.

On May 27,2009, Sydney Cash had a research about whthaens in the human's head while they are in a deep sleep. According to it, neourons take breaks as a persontkesa deep sleep. It pauses to keep people frm sleeping, even if the condition is noisy. Sydney Cash, a neirlogist in Boston, and his team found out the way to study our inside and outside of our brain. Scientist use many tools for their experiment, and one of them is called the EEG. The EEG is also called as electroencephalogram. It shows us the graph that looks like sifferently shaped graphs that represents brain's activity. The height,width and closeness of this wave give scientists a idea of what is happening in person's head. Even though they use those patterns in their study, scientist didn't know what helps that wave to form. According to result of cash's study, the found a inteestinf EEG pattern that is allled k-complex. Scientists found out that k-complex shows up on an EEG when the sleeping person hears a noise or a sounf while they're sleeping. It helps scientist's study because it shows a significant change in th electrical activity in the brain. howevr, EEGs only measure electric signals. In the study, scientist found a better way to see the brain. They studied patients with epilepsy, a msdical condition that can cause by overactive neurons. The people with I had had tiny electrons implanted deeper inside their brain. Electrons areused to a study elecrical currents, and doctoer had hoped that these devices would help them identify the source of the epileptic sizures. Cash found out that those same electrodes could be used to study electrical activity deeper inside the brain. By comparing two set of the information, EEG and Electrones, the scientists thought they could better understand brain activity. They did the experiment about it, and the result came out to be positive. While the patient slept, Cash and the eam collected the data from both EEG and rom the electrodes. They found out that, the k- comple was a sign on the utside that neurons on the inside were taking break, which helps and keeps people from sleeping. They also found out that only some neurons take a break at any given time.








It was very interesting that our braincan form a wave that represents what they are doing. When the article said that the scientist doesn't really know what forms those waves, I was kind of depressed because i figured out that out medication and science techonologies are still very poor to truely understand how our body works by reading this article. But still I think the scientists are doing a good job and it's amazing that we had developed thid far. While i was about half way through the article, I wondered, how do they use the data when they don't know how it's formed? It was a interesting topic, and i was glad that the result came out to be positive. After i finished reading this, I promied myself that I would do my very best at studying this topic, about the brain, because I thought it was a pretty interesting topic.

As removing the gray wolf from protection under the Endangered Species Act, a new study cautions removing the gray wolf may affect another species, the pronghorn. The study said that fewer wolves mean more coyotes.which decreases the number of pronghorns because there are so many coyotes.According to the story, wolf packs keep coyote numbers in check, while feeding on pronghorn fawn themselves. After the study, they could see that fawns have higher survival rates when wolves are present on the ecosystem. The result showed that only 10percent of fawns survived when there were a little wolves, but the coyotes densities were higher. in are where number og wolves were higher, 34 percent of pronghorn survived. wolves reduced number of cayotes by killing them outright of by causing them to shift to safer areas. At present, there are about 300 wolves in Wyoming and 700 in Idaho. If delisting occurs, Wyoming and Idaho have announced their intention to reduce wolf number by 50 percent and 80 percent. " this study show just how complex relationships between predators and their prey can be. It's an important reminder that we often don't understand ecosystems nearly as well as we think we do, and that our efforts to manipulate them can have unexpected consequences" said Berger.

I think removing the grey wolves were wrong thing to do because it affected many other species too. By removing the wolves, the population of coyotes increased, which decreased the population of Pronghorn. As we can see in the result of the study, only 10 percent survived when there was less wolves. when there were a lot of wolves, 34 percent of Pronghorns survived. By looking at this result, we can see that not removing the wolves, gives more survival rate to Pronghorns. Even if the Wolf pack reduces the population of coyotes too much, we can always make it better by reducing the wolf number by 50 percent and 80 percent. In many other ways, I think letting the ecosystem runs by makes things go better. I certainly do not think it is good idea to remove a one ( or several) species out of it's ecosystem because they are connected to each other in many other ways.
